Eisenhower backs fair trial for American GI in Japan

President Eisenhower said he is confident William S. Girard will receive a fair trial in Japanese courts and that the U S government will monitor the case closely. He praised the Japanese judicial system and noted U S legal experts call it eminently fair in cases involving American soldiers.

India’s Demand To Enter Arms Talks Undecided

The six day recess of the fire power disarmament conference left India's request to join the talks undecided as Britain France Canada and the United States opposed. Russia supported the move and U S delegate Harold E Stassen was expected to present a new partial disarmament plan when talks resume. The Soviet Union used the delay to push propaganda on fears of further nuclear tests.

Lake Texoma floods threaten three states

Swollen by weeks of rain Lake Texoma pours torrents down the Red River threatening floods in Texas Oklahoma and Arkansas. Army engineers say the crest near Denison Texas will be about 644 feet above sea level by late Thursday or Friday. Inflow reported 105 000 cubic feet per second as thunderstorms loom and further flooding possible as far as Fulton Arkansas.

The Atomic Energy Commission fired a balloon suspended device from Yucca Flat at 4 46 a m P D T using Livermore Laboratory equipment for 45 experiments including rabbit eye sensitivity tests It was the first AEC balloon detonation with a likely yield of one kiloton or less The fireball appeared for under a minute near dawn and balloon safety devices were used to prevent free movement

Terre Haute Aviation seeks hangars at Paul Cox Field

Terre Haute Aviation Inc. asks the Board of Aviation Commissioners to authorize construction of ten hangars at Paul Cox Field with a nearly 20000 dollar project. Victor Tatelman and Harold Bitzegaio represented the company as construction plans were filed for board review. A special meeting to decide the petition is expected within two weeks. The board will also review a request from the Civil Aeronautics Board regional office about a proposed television tower.

Margaret Truman gives birth to a boy in New York

Margaret Truman Daniel, 33, and her husband Clifton Daniel, 44, welcomed a six pound eight ounce boy at Doctors Hospital. The baby was born at 12 11 a m with Dr Louise Dantuono as physician. The Trumans and their families expressed happiness as Margaret and the infant were reported doing fine.

Broad Study Of State Tax Issues Starts

INDIANAPOLIS June 5 Several studies to be made by the Indiana Tax Study Commission included today a hot potato the fact that manufacturers still pay no state tax on their interstate sales The commission which collects tax data and proposed new laws decided Tuesday to investigate four other tax problems between now and the 1959 Indiana Legislature State Sen Matthew Welsh D Vincennes Senate minority leader in the 1957 General Assembly told other commission members the fact that the assembly failed to pass a net worth tax on manufacturers as a political question is going to be a hot potato Manufacturers and farmers selling interstate pay practically no state tax Welsh pointed out since they are exempt from the gross income tax and all but a penny of the 15 cent state property tax was repealed This situation if left unanswered is going to create an opportunity for a lot of people to make a lot of wild accusations Welsh said The commission also agreed to study a net income tax as ordered by the Legislature a sales tax the possibility of eliminating property taxes and state federal local tax relations
