The Commercial Advertiser notes $2000 Treasurys sold at 4 percent premium. The Baltimore Post says Philadelphia bank notes including United States Bank notes sold at nine and a half to ten percent discount. Treasury notes at a quarter percent premium, United States Bank notes at nine and a half to ten percent below specie. Post notes at eighteen to twenty four percent below specie. The Liverpool cargo includes sixty cases of valuable silks worth £10,000 each. New York Express cites six hundred thousand pounds for figur ed silks, about $2.8 million. Questions arise over who pays amid ongoing bankruptcies and bank suspensions in a nation tolerating such extravagance, Boston Courier remarks.
A large sale by Wm. H. Franklin at Prince's Nurseries in Flush ing and a smaller sale by Mr. Peck drew a vast crowd and steamboat passengers. Multicaulis trees fetched 18 to 28 cents for smaller or rooty stock and 52 to 55 cents for select specimens. About 5000 high quality trees were offered and over 200,000 trees sold. total proceeds surpassed 352,000. M. Y. Express.
The Philadelphia Ledger reports a sale of Morus Multicaulis trees at Mr Hatch's farm near Philadelphia on Thursday. The catalogue listed 103 rows totaling about 0000 trees. The first five rows totaling 3248 trees sold at 27.4 cents per tree, followed by five rows 3643 trees at 9 3/4 cents, and five rows 3491 trees at 26 cents per tree before the sale was halted.
Price Current from a Houston paper lists a wide range of commodities with high figures for October. Flour at 3.75 per 80 units, pork 80 dollars per barrel, beef 57.0 to 50, corn meal 68, sweet potatoes 64 to 68, coffee 50 to 60 cents per pound, sugar 4.30 to 5.0, butter 1.25 to 1.50, eggs 1.50 to 2.00 per dozen, chickens 10 to 18 dollars per dozen, lard 6.24 to 7.5 per unit, molasses 1.50 to 2.00 per gallon.
A man named William Kitchham was brought to the police in a drunken state, placed in a cell, and left until yesterday morning when his body was found with his face eaten by rats.
The Tallahassee and Iola Railroad faces delays due to fears of native attacks. An officer surveying the route has ordered a guard for protection of the company during construction.
The Tallahassee Star reports that on the 27th ultimo a party of Indians attacked Mr. Bunch's house at Wakulla, killed Mrs. Bunch and a child, burned the house, and wounded Mrs. Whitaker. A detachment of Minute Men left Monday morning to pursue the Indians. News reached Tallahassee Sunday night.
The Louisville Gazette reports a Kentucky based improvement by two young gentlemen from Oldham County in milling work. They claim to concentrate machinery weight to increase power, asserting a fifty horsepower steam engine could run on one horsepower applied to the fly wheel. One inventor visited Louisville to test the experiment.
The Rev. J. B. Makan and others were convicted at Georgetown Ohio on an indictment charging forcible rescue of a runaway enslaved person from Kentucky. Mahan received a $300 fine and thirty days imprisonment.
The Florence Gazette reports a near two mile long bridge over the Tennessee at Muscle Shoals collapsed on Sunday with a tremendous crash. Its projector Mr J R Henry was on the bridge, was thrown off but not seriously hurt.
A Gibson County mother sent three children to fetch eggs from a nearby nest while she washed. A copperhead bit all three children. during the chase the youngest drowned in the wash tub. Two hours later the three bitten children died, leaving the family in despair.
A young man named Fisher fell from the top of a high bridge on the Little Schuylkill and Catawissa Rail Road into the vale below, a drop exceeding eighty feet. He died in four hours from injuries. The morning of the incident he told a companion he had a premonition he would be killed if he crossed the bridge that day.
