Fresquez recounts jail escape and dispute with guards

Leroy Fresquez testifies he simply walked out of Taos County jail on August 3 and disputes jail administrator Fred Archuleta and guard Modesta Cisneros over the escape. He pleads guilty in district court and receives 18 months in prison and one year probation. Fresquez says Archuleta shouted orders as he left, while Cisneros disputes seeing him crawl through a lunch-tray slot. He was later captured in Albuquerque.

Taos Job Fair Urges Economic Diversification

Taos County faces high unemployment tied to tourism, prompting a state job fair at the Sagebrush Inn led by New Mexico Labor Department officials. Officials stress diversifying the economy to counter seasonal swings and forest-fire impacts, noting August rates near 11 percent and statewide unemployment around 6.4 percent. The fires created some jobs but underlying weakness remains a concern for community health.

Wal-Mart runs a petition drive in Taos to back a second store a year after officials killed a Super Wal-Mart plan. A proposed 180000 square foot complex would have exceeded the town’s 80000 square foot limit, keeping zoning unchanged. A spokesman could not be reached for comment while town officials denied knowledge of any new Wal-Mart proposal.
