High-speed chase ends with Aram Montoya Jr arrest

Aram Montoya Jr 23 led five officers from two agencies on a 25 mile chase across Tas County on Sunday night June 26. The sequence ended when his 1997 pickup high centered on a tree and police captured him at a residence in Talpa. He faces multiple charges including criminal sexual penetration and aggravated burglary, with a long prior record noted by authorities. Betsy Phillips contributed to this report.

Carson Implements Fire Restrictions Across Forest Lands

Thunderstorm activity last weekend sparked ten wildfires mainly on Bureau of Land Management land within the Carson National Forest. Most fires stayed under one acre, were human or lightning caused, and were extinguished by Monday morning. Fire restrictions limit fires to developed areas. wilderness zones ban campfires in Carson and Pecos Wilderness portions.

DWI ARRESTS AND PLEA REPORTED IN TAOS

Information from the Eighth Judicial District Attorneys Office notes two Taos cases. Ryan Hammer, 18, was arrested June 12 for driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor and negligent use of a weapon, with Officer Alexander J. Rodriguez of the New Mexico State Police assisting. Cesario Edward Vigil, 53, pleaded guilty June 27 to a fourth offense of driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor, with Agent Patrick Oakeley of the New Mexico State Police handling the case.

Blotter items from June report disturb town youth park and airport

In late June a skate park at the Youth and Family Center closed due to juveniles throwing smoke bombs. A report from Oakeley Lane described a person bitten by an animal possibly a squirrel or groundhog. guidance given to freeze the animal for pickup by animal control. Fireworks were shot into the air on Calle del Monte and a driver was cited after an SUV tipped down the runway at Taos Regional Airport. windows were broken at homes on Paseo del Cafion west.

Taos bans controlled burns after near structure fire

Taos Volunteer Fire Chief Leroy Gonzales ordered an immediate halt to all controlled burns until July 9. A ditch fire near Apache and Zuni Streets at 11:29 a.m. Wednesday prompted the move as officials assess conditions daily after July 9. Winds and tinder-dry June grass raise fire risk. Public urged to be extra cautious with fireworks during the Fourth of July.

Arizona fires fuel hazy air across state

Forest Service reports haze tied to Arizona wildfires led by the Cave Creek Complex. The complex includes Cave Creek at 136,855 acres, Lousy at 2,800 acres, and Broad at 345 acres, with extreme fire behavior and winds up to 40 mph triggering red flag warnings.
