Taos Judge Betty Martinez named to state advisory panel

Taos magistrate Judge Betty Martinez was chosen by the New Mexico Supreme Court as one of five magistrate judges to serve three years on the Magistrate Judge Advisory Committee. George Anaya Jr. joins her from Santa Fe for a three year term. others will serve one or two years. Martinez, Taos County magistrate for 23 years, welcomes the honor and plans to seek a further four year term in 2006.

Burglar receives deferred sentence in Rio Arriba case

San Juan Pueblo man John A. Archuleta, 38, received a deferred sentence on June 13 ending with five years of supervised probation and restitution of nearly 127 dollars for burglary damages. Archuleta pled guilty to aggravated burglary after a March indictment that included firearm larceny counts and property damage. He is in Delancey Street treatment in Rio Arriba County and will complete a two year program, with sentencing conducted via teleconference, while two firearm larceny and one property damage counts were dismissed. District Judge Peggy J. Nelson oversaw the case with Prosecution by Mark Lovato and defense by Cindy L. Turcotte.

Fernando Fire in Taos Canyon Grows Then Is Contained

A small forest fire started in Taos Canyon near Shady Brook in Carson National Forest on Thursday June 16. By Friday June 17 it reached 4 1/2 acres, but 19 Carson Hot Shots contained it by evening. No structures or resources were harmed and officials cited recent moisture plus dry grass as factors.

BLOTTER July weekend incidents reported in Taos area

BLOTTER entries note a dog bite to a leg at Hacienda on Saturday. a late afternoon storm downed a traffic light at Camino dela Merced and Paseo del Pueblo Sur. a missing 25 year old man described as tall and slender with a white shirt and light pants was reported Monday and located Tuesday. an all night alarm disturbed guests at the Taos Inn near Taos Poster Company early Tuesday morning.
