County to Hike Taxes With New Gross Receipts Plan
Taos County will add an eighth of a percent gross receipts tax on county purchases after January 1, boosting total taxes to about 4.62 cents per dollar. Residents of Ei Rito Canjilon and Tres Piedras west of Taos protested a planned fuelwood lottery that would have ended first come first serve for green pinon and oak. The Questa district will still use a lottery for permits while locals argue non residents would gain. In Questa a lottery has been used for four years.

Taos county Republican Party chairman Celestino Romero among 18 party legislators invited to greet President Reagan in Albuquerque during a June 16 stop. Last two sentenced in fall cocaine bust in district court
Lee Weinland III and Herbert Cordova the last of 23 charged with distributing controlled substances in October pleaded guilty Friday in District Court. Weinland got a deferred nine year sentence with five years probation 300 hours community service and restitution plus drug rehab costs. Cordova received a five year suspended sentence five years probation three years supervised and restitution. Rick Segura remains at large after fleeing custody. Assistant district attorney Jessie Cosby called the dispositions appropriate noting most offenders drew near five years probation and the operation overall was a success with law enforcement praised and the drug trade's staying power questioned.
