Taos sees $5 million summer construction surge

In Taos, about $5 million in new construction is expected to start this summer, with $3.5 million planned for a Smith's supermarket building within the year. Through May, permits total $1.4 million, while two major projects await permits. Several ventures underway include Julian Garcia General Tires on South Santa Fe Road and a car wash and gas station by Edward M. Peter of Albuquerque. Other projects include a Plaza de Retiro administration building redevelopment and Las Casitas condominiums on Padre Lane.

Valle district eyes five member board and Talpa appointment

El Valle de los Ranchos Water and Sanitation District may expand to five directors and appoint two from Talpa after Delfino Torrez resigned last July and was accepted May 13. The district seeks Talpa funding help as EF Valle pushes Talpa to cooperate on water system upgrades. EID will meet Talpa residents tonight to discuss options and a possible grant transfer of over 140000 dollars.

Waters drown Costilla child in flash flood tragedy

In Costilla Taos County a toddler, Andrea L. Trujillo, 217 months old, died Friday after falling into the Acequia Madre de Costilla near Poleo. Her mother retrieved the body and she was pronounced dead on arrival at Questa Clinic. Flood threats linger as storms and snowmelt test regional water and road systems.

Flood fears over state river rafting amid high water reports

Taos County river outfitters report widespread public concern driven by exaggerated flood coverage. Steve Harris of Far Flung Adventures and Dan Schuller of Sierra Outfitters say rafting is good in the Gorge, with flows around 4,000 cfs, not the 7,000 cfs peak of 1979, yet calls from Albuquerque-area would‑be rafters persist.
