Flooding Red River hits hatchery fish losses
Heavy rains and snowmelt sent Red River rising, flooding the Red River Fish Hatchery below Questa. About 20 percent of hatchery fish suffocated in muddy water and several water lines were washed out. Department officials evacuated roughly 260,000 trout to lakes across the state, reducing future stocking. Poaching reports rose as some tried to profit from the forced evacuation, prompting increased patrols.
