Has Taos tourism peaked and leveled off in recent years

Local economists and chamber officials say Taos tourism has “peaked” with growth flattening. Lodging tax receipts rose from 63,000 in 1979 to over 600,000 in 1994 95, then leveled at about that level. Officials cite water sewer moratorium and saturation, while gross receipts rise 7 to 10 percent despite a stagnant rate of lodging growth.

Water warning issued for Arroyo Seco residents

Arroyo Seco residents are urged not to drink their water after routine testing found fecal coliform bacteria in the supply. Environmentalists warn of possible illness including hepatitis and other waterborne diseases. residents should boil water, drink bottled water, or add chlorine to disinfect. Investigators focus on the distribution system and wells as they probe contamination sources. An unrelated Sewage contamination report is also being investigated in San Cristobal near a creek used for livestock water.

At a Sunday meeting Aug 13 property owners urged independence, arguing Taos Ski Valley could fund itself with over 1 million dollars in revenue if incorporated. Candle factory permit passes in Taos County

Anaya Remembered as a Lifelong Fireman and Friend

Louis Anaya, 41, a full time fireman for ten years, died Thursday of liver failure at Holy Cross Hospital. His funeral Saturday was a formal fireman’s service, the department’s first truck a 1936 model carrying his coffin. Friends recall his cheerful spirit and knack for recalling names, with colleagues noting his impact from junior high to the firehouse.
