TSV plans pull Taos Ski Valley toward incorporation

A Taos County clerk approval on August 2 triggers signatures for a Taos Ski Valley incorporation petition aiming at a January 1996 vote to become a municipality. The Twining, Amizette and South Fork Community Association set a Sunday meeting to map next steps while state analysts review revenue feasibility under newly amended incorporation provisions.

Arson Fires Plague Taos County and Pilar

A weekend flare of arson fires in Taos County and near Pilar burned numerous sites including more than 20 at Taos Pueblo. BLM official Victor Apodaca confirmed arson for three Pilar blazes the Quartz Mine and Dump fires. Fire crews from BLM Forest Service and volunteers battled the fires aided by a slurry plane from Albuquerque to slow the Quartz fire.

Go-kart Noise Delays Park Decision by Commission

Conflicting noise data from developer Victor Criswell and neighborhood opponents over the proposed Three Eagles Fun Park led the Planning and Zoning Commission to delay a decision on August 2. The Esters Neighborhood Association filed an appeal amid the disputed issue and related pleas regarding the project.

Taos memory of Bataan Death March prisoner Jake Padilla

Taos residents recount the wartime story of Jake Padilla a Taga who died a prisoner of war after the Bataan Death March. His friend Steve Sanchez aided him while malarial and dysenteric illness weakened him. Padilla’s mother Candido Padilla recalls the brutal hunger and cruelty faced by soldiers, the loyalty of friends, and the broader role of the 200th Coast Artillery Battery H from Taos County and Taos Pueblo in the Philippines during World War II.
