Lightning lit the night as late summer storms moved into Taos County on Monday August 1. Taos weather records show a high of 83 and a low of 47 for the period with .35 inch precipitation at the official station. Storms have persisted across the county all week.
Alfredo Rascon, manager of Top of the World Farms near Costilla, confirms Taos County’s largest agricultural operation will end vegetable farming this fall and switch to ranching. Paragon Resources plans to stop irrigation, plant grass seed, and move workers to Estancia farm while water rights transfer remains undecided.
Cisneros of Questa has been elected president of the Taos County Labor Council formed to unite county unions. Julian Romero of AF of Teachers Taos is vice president. other officers include Dora Brite, Nancy Morales, Frank Ortiz, and Philip Archuleta. The next meeting is Aug. 30.
Carruthers a professor of agricultural economics at New Mexico State University and assistant secretary of state for Lands and Natural Resources criticizes personal attacks on Secretary Watt. He defends the administration's energy leasing policy and explains views on the payment-in-kind program and WIPP during a Taos tour with remarks to the Farm and Livestock Bureau and local women's groups. Mayor Phil Lovato declared a state of emergency to address an epidemic of prairie dogs in Taos New Mexico with officials saying the town will eradicate prairie dogs on private land without owner consent to curb a bubonic plague risk amid a record 18 cases in 1983 and a recent local case linked to fleas carried by a Ranchos de Taos woman’s dog.
Taos businesses report a cooler summer as tourism drops up to 25 percent while some venues hold steady or show small gains. Milicent Rogers Museum and local galleries note 20 percent declines in visitors, with foreign tourist numbers down from three years ago. Hospitality groups describe erratic activity though optimism lingers for a final late-summer uptick as August bookings rise.
