President Eisenhower ordered federal troops to enforce school integration in Little Rock drawing praise from northerners and harsh criticism from southern officials. Adlai Stevenson and Gov. Chandler urged action while Sen. Johnston and Gov. Harriman warned of consequences. Paratroopers moved in as Arkansas National Guard was federalized to ensure nine Black students could enter Central High School.
Frieda, the sixth tropical storm of the season, is losing its violent characteristics. Wholesale food prices fell for the second straight week per Dun and Bradstreet with the index at 6.17 down from 6.24 a week earlier and 6.08 a year ago. The seven cent decline followed an eight cent drop the prior week, marking the lowest level since May 28. In Algiers nationalist rebels seized July and August, with the 1957 low at 6.08. In Munich, Bay by parachute troops raided in May, and Wilhelm Hoegner was identified as Yacef Saadi in a birthday-present report.
