A region off the New England coast brought heavy rain to the Northeast with frost warnings issued for parts of Pennsylvania West Virginia and Ohio. Skies ranged from clear in the Ohio River valley to Gulf coast and mostly cloudy across the plains with scattered showers in the Rockies and potential thundershowers in southern Florida central Arizona and the upper plains. Temperatures ranged from 29 in Alpena Michigan and Kalispell Montana to 80 in Yuma Arizona and parts of Florida.
Irene was packing 65 mph winds and forecasters expected it to reach hurricane force by tonight while tracking west-northwest at 17 mph. The storm posed no land threat, centered about 760 miles east-northeast of Barbados with gales extending 150 miles north. A separate tropical low near Bermuda weakened, and a depression south of Halifax was to merge with a northeast U.S. system.
