Irving Berlin, the composer of more than 1,000 songs including God Bless America, died in his sleep at his Manhattan home at age 101. His son-in-law said Berlin had not been ill and simply fell asleep, ending a life that defined American song for generations.
NEW YORK The co-pilot of the USAir jet that crashed into the East River pushed an auto throttle disconnect button by mistake during a first takeoff in a 737 400. He attempted manual thrust, then aborted. Investigators noted inexperience with the aircraft and suspended the pilots’ licenses after the incident.
Wind from Hugo toppled trees and cut power across Onondaga and Madison counties. Gusts reached 48 mph at 2:16 am with 19 inches of rain and another 0.2 inch after midnight. About 16,000 customers dark at peak. Niagara Mohawk crews restored most by daybreak as Perryville still had 155 outages.
