GE Layoffs Continue After PAVE PAWS Bid Ruling

GE Electronics Defense Systems will extend weekly layoffs as the protest against the PAVE PAWS radar contract award remains unresolved. About 300 to 400 local workers will be affected as some are laid off or transferred while others stay on salary under income extension pending the final decision. The $80 million contract was awarded to Raytheon, and GE bid about $6 million lower.

Kissinger Ends Africa Peace Mission With Hope

Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger wraps up a 10 day Africa peace shuttle and departs for London with a warm feeling and sense of hope. He met Kenyan President Jomo Kenyatta in Nakuru to seek support for peace proposals on Rhodesia and Southwest Africa. Kenya reaffirmed pro Western ties as Kissinger received a traditional dance display and artifacts before leaving.

Snow hit Whiteface Mountain ushers autumn start

Four inches of snow blanketed Whiteface Mountain in northern New York as autumn began. Forecasters predict 30s overnight with frost in the central Southern Tier, Adirondacks, and St. Lawrence Valley. Hancock Airport’s weatherman notes a 40 percent chance of showers tonight, then clearing with a low near 40. Tomorrow, partly cloudy and cooler with highs in the mid 50s and a 20 percent rain chance.

First Swine Flu Vaccine Shipment Heads to States

The first batch of swine flu vaccine for a nationwide immunization drive has been dispatched from West Point Pennsylvania and should reach U S states in about three days. Some people are already planning for next summer while others recall last summer's delays.

Tanker derailment at Martisco spurs cleanup and precautions

A propane tanker derailed near Martisco causing track damage and a brief power cut. Crews from ConRail and local firms cleared the 500 foot washout while L P Transportation siphoned propane to a tank truck for Auburn Tex Gas. Firefighters vigil kept the scene safe overnight with monitors training on the tanker.

Increase in thefts raises crime rate

The FBI reports theft up 11 percent while violent crimes fall 6 percent in the first six months of 1976, lifting the national crime rate 3 percent from 1975. Syracuse total serious crimes rose to 6,383, with burglary and larceny driving most increases.
