German mutherities charged today that rumors of Adolf Hitler being alive are a ruse to regain power. Deputy Mayor Kark Maron denied press reports and said he believed Hitler definitely alive.
Reports to the United Nations War Crimes Commission describe prisoner cannibalism by Japanese troops and confessions of atrocities. American authorities evacuate prisoners from camps in Japan China Manchuria and Korea as tens of thousands move toward repatriation. Zamperini travels home from Yokohama as Allied prisoners in Formosa are gathered aboard escort carriers and destroyers near Manila.
Deputy charges 1 motorist with reckless driving for striking Herman Mascerf on Thompson Road and fleeing the scene. Mascerf suffers a fractured jaw facial lacerations and chest injury. an ambulance takes him to St Joseph Hospital. Louis Herbert of Wolf Street admits driving the vehicle and aiding after the crash. Arraignment set before Justice John Kelb at East Syracuse tonight.
Theodore Catiner, 37, of 652 Murnet Ave, fined $25 after pleading guilty to petty larceny for stealing a cocker spaniel puppy from Glendon Schubert’s car on Onondaga’s SmIlna Street. Judge Homer V. Walsh accepted the plea and remanded Catiner after the payment of the fine.
Judge Stephen W. Brennan adjourned the Auburn term of the U S District Court starting in Oct in Auburn. Grand Jury and Trial Jury will be convened. hearings on criminal and civil matters to be held in Syracuse with Gen Jonathan Wainwright on the committee considering the term.
Retired Sergeant Gene D. Birdwell, 22, learning his Kansas City wife remarried his uncle while he was a Japanese POW, expressed disbelief and sought confirmation. He was under medical care and faced an annulment granted September 7 after learning of his return, and considered his next move.
Col Merle Howe of Grand Rapids Michigan, highly decorated officer of the 32d Division, was killed August 30 when his liaison aircraft crashed near Yamashita's mountain headquarters. The crash, likely due to engine trouble, killed Howe instantly while Lt Edgar Irvine was injured lightly. The Imperial Japanese Army conveyed condolences for Howe’s death in the line of duty.
In Seoul crowds denounce Jap rule as Lt Gen Hedden asserts Japanese officials will stay in place. MacArthur urges restraint and protection of Japanese rights. Allied actions include liberating 85,000 prisoners and ongoing naval and air operations around Kyushu and Honshu as Japan nears surrender. The prosecutor cites income of 273,913 dollars and expenditures of 461,833 dollars over ten years.
