The Forgotten Victims group marks the Attica uprising with a candlelight vigil, urging New York state to acknowledge guards and families harmed by the riot and retaking. Organizers seek apology counseling and compensation as a three member task force reviews demands after an $8 million settlement.
Alany Strallo reflects on Sept 13 1971 when as a 22 year old state trooper he rescued his brother Frank amid the Attica prison takeover chaos. He notes today’s riot response teams would prevent such perilous rescues and recalls the deadly standoff that left 11 staff and 32 inmates dead.
A list of correctional staff and inmates killed during the Attica rebellion retaking in September 1971 is provided, naming Sgt Edward Cunningham Borradho and others shot or beaten by state police. The piece notes memorials and ongoing demands for justice and compensation, with comments on hostage negotiations and survivors.
