Census estimates show Onondaga County shed about two thousand residents from 1980 to 1988 as Madison and Oswego counties gained. The three county Syracuse metro area expanded by 7300 people, reaching roughly 650,300 as residents moved seeking cheaper homes and lower taxes.
A fire at Pfeiffers Drive-In in Onondaga gutted the fast food spot about to close for the season. Fire crews from multiple districts battled the flames for about 30 minutes. One firefighter, Capt. David Okoniewski, injured an ankle but no other injuries were reported. Investigators are probing the cause at Cards Corners near Route 175 and Cedarvale Road.
The forecast calls for dense clouds tonight with a 30 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms. Saturday's weather remains unsettled with lingering shower potential and warm, humid conditions across the region.

The Senate passed a broad anti discrimination bill protecting disabled Americans including many AIDS victims in employment and access to public facilities. It defines disability widely and excludes sexual orientation from coverage, sending the measure to the House for expected approval and a presidential signature. Critics warn of costs and potential legal issues while supporters call it an emancipation proclamation for the disabled.
Mayor Thomas Young unveils a city and school district plan totaling 2.635 billion for next year. The average Syracuse homeowner would face a 36.63 dollar tax increase, with a proposed tax rate of 1.399 per 1000 and a total property tax take of 613 million, up 13 percent from this year. The budget drops Hancock Airport funding as landing fee negotiations proceed and a separate airport budget is planned.
