Bishop Joseph T. O'Keefe, 78, eighth leader of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse, died Tuesday morning of apparent heart failure at St. Joseph's Hospital. He led the seven county diocese from 1987 to 1995 and remained active until retirement two years ago. Funeral Mass planned for Sept. 9 at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
The Air Force and Boeing reveal the Space Maneuver Vehicle a cigar shaped crewless craft designed for reconnaissance and small satellite deployment. Built under a 5.3 million contract with Philips Laboratory the 22 foot 2500 pound vehicle could carry 1200 pounds, stay in orbit up to a year and land autonomously with initial tests planned at Holloman Air Force Base New Mexico.
Miss America officials, who banned contestants from gambling for 19 years, allow entrants aged 21 and older to gamble in Atlantic City as casinos operate since 1978. They may shoot craps and play poker while restrictions on smoking and drinking apply. CEO Leonard C. Horn defends the change, saying the contestants are young women, not children.
