Mild Halloween Weather Predicted By National Weather Service

The National Weather Service at Hancock Airport forecasts partly cloudy skies tonight with a low near 40 and a 20 percent chance of rain. Tomorrow should be variably cloudy with a high of 60 to 65, southwest winds 5 to 15 mph and a 30 percent chance of rain. The extended outlook shows a chance of showers Monday through Wednesday, with highs near 60 and lows around the mid-40s.

Soviet apologize for submarine breach at Swedish waters

The Soviet Union expressed official regret after a submarine strayed into Swedish territorial waters near a naval base. Major drug pipeline busted in Marcellus seizure

In Marcellus police arrested Mario Caputo and Salvatore Prince after a dawn raid netting more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana and cocaine. Authorities also raided a New York City area site linked to the shipment, seizing another 10 1 2 pounds of marijuana and making several arrests. Syracuse Police Chief Thomas J. Sardino called it the largest drug bust in the area and said one suspect was a major wholesaler. The Marcellus haul valued near $1 million. Both defendants face first degree criminal possession charges and await further court dates.

Albany tax bill decision looms after five day session

Gov. Hugh Carey signs compromise measures from the five day session including welfare funding and transit tax revisions while he weighs the disputed property tax reform. The welfare bill covers aid for pregnant women and low income students, totaling about 5 million, with no sure cost estimate. The property tax overhaul would split city Nassau County taxation from the rest of the state, a move Carey may veto or sign.

Rolling Stones to close tour with closed circuit New York show

The Rolling Stones will end their U.S. tour with a satellite broadcast to 200 cities in the United States and Canada. Two men, John Senerjian and Glenn Malek, were arrested for scalping Stones tickets for $160 at Madison Square Garden. A lottery system is used for New York and New Jersey shows to curb scalping, with 83,700 seats available from over 2 million mail applications.
