Marines arrive ashore in Wonsan under the label Operation What-the-Hell. Officers criticize the plan as inadequate versus a slam bang assault and note the Rok troops already advanced, forcing a six day delay as supplies and men moved in a noisome, uncertain posture.
The National Production Authority ordered a midnight halt on new structures for theaters amusement parks race tracks golf courses night clubs skating rinks and summer camps. The ban covers 44 types and aims to conserve materials for armaments while permitting repairs and small projects under five thousand dollars and exempting Defense Department and Atomic Energy Commission builds. This affects federal state and city projects and could delay civilian recreation facilities while steel allocations expand to freight cars and defense related industries.
Senator Robert A. Taft spoke eight times in Ohio coal country despite a local union leader heckling him for ten minutes after one speech. The GOP Senate leader drew a small audience of miners and union members, but was generally well received in John L. Lewis era strongholds of the United Mine Workers.

Vern V. Leeder a 26 year old carthage resident and John B. Sweeney 45 of Edwards were shot dead by hunting companions during opening day of deer season. Leeder died eight miles from Harrisville when Harold Chaufty also of Carthage fired the fatal shot. no charges were filed. Sweeney owner of Hotel Edwards and former state trooper was killed in St Lawrence County by a shot fired by Then Whitford of South Edwards who said he aimed at two deer. Coroner Dr A D Burr ruled the deaths accidental.
Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Vishinsky called Trygve Lie unfit for reelection as United Nations secretary general. He denied rumors of a quarrel with Stalin and Molotov over Lie's peace program, noting the Security Council leak about Lie rejecting Soviet amendments. Lie reportedly presented the peace plan to Washington London Paris and Moscow.
New York stock prices fell sharply as a sudden selling attack pushed losses beyond $2 a share. Steels and autos led the decline while selling orders flooded the market and the ticker tape fell eight minutes behind the trading floor.
Defense Minister Sihn Sung Mo urged the United Nations to demand the return of war criminals who fled to Red China or Soviet Siberia for trial. He also called for reparations from the Soviet Union for Korea’s damages. He noted North Korea and its Soviet allies began the war with a June 20 invasion.

A thousand or more hear Senators Herbert H Lehman and Walter A Lynch in Syracuse Civic Theater denouncing Governor Dewey and Truman blocking the St. Lawrence Seaway project. Lynch pledges Democratic farm policies if elected and vows Albany will back agriculture.
The Weather Bureau forecasts a low of 28 with frost tonight. Syracuse skies failed to clear last night keeping temps five degrees above predicted. a 37 degree low with no frost. Watertown and Utica report frost with readings of 31 and 32. A .01 inch shower recorded. Assistant weatherman Alex Sadowski says temps rise to 55 tomorrow afternoon and continue warming into the weekend with southeasterly winds.
SATGON reports French forces in northern Indo China retreated farther toward Laokay near the Chinese border. The communiqué says troops east of Lackay moved to new defensive positions as they fought Ho Chi Minh’s Communist rebels in the jungle.
India proposed that all 60 UN members specify by March how much they will reduce armaments and share in an international peace fund. The fund would be financed by savings from arms cuts and used to combat hunger disease and raise living standards in underdeveloped areas.
Bernard Baruch urged at Brown University that mobilizing manpower without curbing prices and profits is immoral. He warned that unchecked price rises could destroy state, city and local government and called for decisive action to stop price increases.
The United States and Canada adopted a program of defense cooperation. It mirrors World War II era exchanges of technical knowledge and establishes a coordinated system to control scarce materials. The State Department said the pact will boost industrial mobilization and readiness for military emergencies.

FBI reports the arrest of Herman Floyd Kinner, 38, of Wilmington Ohio, for the September 17 bombing of a Voice of America transmitter in Mason Ohio. J Edgar Hoover said Kinner was captured in El Paso Texas and confessed to the act after claiming military service and mental health treatment.
An Associated Press report from Kalimpong India states a Chinese Communist liberation army has invaded Tibet to annex it. Tibetan broadcasts in Lhasa describe shock and deter mined fighting, with fears Dalai Lama and Tibetan officials may be harmed if resistance collapses. Reds march from Dongha Pass toward Neiwutsi as Tibet braces with 10,000 troops nearby. Pravda cites orders to free 3,000,000 people atop the world.
