Gerald Knafele a 32 year old Union Carbide Linde Division employee was killed in an 8 am explosion at the DeWitt plant while cleaning a large calcium carbonate container on a rear loading dock. The blast damaged the dock blew out windows and drew investigators from Union Carbide and the U S Labor Department. Autopsy planned. access to the plant restricted.
