The Air Force awaited scientific verification of a rocket reaching an apparent 1000 to 4000 miles above Earth during Project Far Side. Launched from a balloon 100,000 feet over Eniwetok, the 30 foot rocket carried a 3.5 pound research package and aimed to study the upper atmosphere.
