Community dinner raises funds for DeRuyter woman’s cancer care
Nearly 200 people crowded into a DeRuyter parish hall for a benefit dinner to cover breast cancer medical expenses for Karin Wightman, a longtime local seamstress. The event, organized by the United Church of Christ Parish Hall volunteers, boosted nearly $2,000. A seven mile walkathon is planned for Saturday to raise additional funds, starting at the town hall at 9 a.m. and looping to DeRuyter Reservoir. Volunteers from the church, DeRuyter Raritan chapter, and Tioughnioga Fire Department auxiliary helped, with Wightman expressing gratitude but preferring to stay out of the spotlight.
