Deer season opens today in North Country with cautious notes from DEC

A mild snowless winter leaves the Northern deer herd in good shape but hunters face varying conditions this season. DEC biologist Ted Smith says luck hinges on weather, leaf cover and snow, with season running through December 4. Milk fund pays out 3 million to dairy farmers

The Milk Producers Security Fund has paid 3 million to dairy farmers owed money by the defunct Glen and Mohawk Milk Association. The final 1 million was mailed this week after the state Supreme Court allowed reimbursements, with total claims totaling 4.3 million and the state seeking recovery of most funds.

Streeten to discuss eye disorders at Eye Bank banquet

Dr David Streeten will discuss Diabetes and How It Relates to Eye Disorders at the Eye Bank's 28th annual banquet tonight in General Hutchinson House. Streeten heads endocrinology at Upstate Medical Center and pursues studies on age hypertension and intellectual performance under a U S Public Health Service grant. The Eye Bank's 1984 slate of officers will be presented along with reports on medical and laboratory activities and committee function. The Eye Bank, founded by Syracuse Lions Clubs to encourage eye donation for transplants and research, is headquartered at Upstate Medical Center.

Fund established for Dr. Covert memorial award

Syracuse University has created a memorial fund honoring Dr. Catherine L. Covert to fund an annual scholarly paper award in mass communications. Dr. Covert, a noted journalist and professor, died after a long illness. A memorial service is planned for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cazenovia Presbyterian Church.
