A major earthquake near San Francisco Bay Area forced almost 7.0 on the Richter scale. Buildings fell and a highway overpass collapsed, crushing hundreds. Power, water, and communications failed across the region as officials assessed damage with limited data. News continues on A11 A12 and A13.
The San Andreas quake devastated Northern California with over 250 dead and 400 injured as aftershocks hit the region. Alameda County spokesman Marty Boyer and Lt Gov Leo McCarthy cited rising death tolls, with 271 reported. the 69 magnitude quake struck at 5 04 p m Tuesday, even as thousands were stranded downtown. An aftershock measured 45 on the Richter scale at 325 PDT per the National Earthquake Information Center. A half-mile section of Interstate 880 in Oakland collapsed, killing many motorists.
Oakland workers and bystanders labored to free motorists trapped under twisted metal after a collapsed elevated highway on Interstate 880. Officials report 263 dead with screams and crashing debris filling the scene as George Donovan, a Berkeley truck driver, describes the undulating pavement and sudden disaster.
San Jose reports a devastating Bay Area quake that toppled buildings and highways, cut power and gas lines, left neighborhoods in darkness, and caused fear. Oakland resident Greg Terry described witnessing collapse on Interstate 880 between 12th and 30th streets as hospitals filled and looting occurred.
Republican challenger Bernard Mahoney raised 16082 for two months while Democratic incumbent Mayor Thomas Young collected pay from city payrolls in a pattern seen since 1985. A Herald-Journal review of employment and Elections records shows many workers, ward leaders, and Democratic committee members drawing city checks. Young defends the system as lawful and says he has given jobs to allies and acquaintances.
A makeshift Red Cross shelter in the Moscone Center ballroom drew about 100 stranded tourists conventioneers and residents from nearby hotels. They found no food or cats and slept on tables and in corners as they fled dark streets seeking safety in the downtown shelter near the financial district and transit terminals.
At Candlestick Park the San Francisco crowd anticipated a classic World Series game. A violent, increasing tremor disrupted the scene as the light towers loomed above the field. The 5 pm quake rattled fans and players, turning pregame buzz into urgent concern.
Roy Palmer paused on the Crucible picket line and called his bank about a home equity loan. Rejected finances sparked fear of telling his wife Lauren. At home Monday an argument escalated and he shot his wife and 15 year old daughter Renee, before authorities investigated.
