A festive ceremony in Oil City celebrated Onondaga County's largest mall as Mayor Thomas Young joked about losing tax revenue to the project. County officials estimate the county would gain about 27.8 million over 15 years if tax sharing applied to Carousel Mall TEACHERS PAY.
In Cape Canaveral Florida hundreds of armed guards patrolled to deter anti nuclear trespass as the shuttle Atlantis was fueled for launch with the Galileo Mars probe. NASA officials said the 1.5 billion unmanned craft would study Jupiter. liftoff was set for 1257 pm after prior delays from engine computer and navigation unit fixes.
The Onondaga County Sheriff's Department SWAT team has surrounded homes three times this year in standoffs. In September in Van Buren a 21 year old Liverpool visitor fled to a basement, tear gas fired, no charges filed. In April Robert C. O'Dell of Radisson fired at deputies, stayed inside with his mother, and surrendered after 24 hours. O'Dell later pled guilty to reckless endangerment and received six months in jail, probation, and court ordered psychiatric counseling.
Roy Palmer 41, a Crucible Specialty Metals shop steward, shot his wife Lauren 38 and their 15 year old daughter Renee in a bitter domestic dispute at their DeWitt home. After SWAT surrounded the residence at 490 Cultamer Road, Palmer killed himself with a .38 caliber handgun, leaving police unable to contact him. His wife survived with injuries. the daughter died from a chest wound.
