Two Penn Central railroad cars derailed on a track at Caughdeney and Ver Plank Road north of Clay. One car carried fuel and spilled, but no injuries were reported. The number of attached cars and destination were not known.
A state Board of Public Disclosure report finds about half of the Mental Hygiene Department’s 1500 professionals earning over 30 000 dollars yearly moonlight for roughly 13 hours weekly, earning on average 26 000 dollars a year. The board orders a five hour weekly limit on outside work. Governor Carey backs compliance and ordered the agency to enforce the policy.
AP reports two American medical researchers Baruch Blumberg of University of Pennsylvania and D Carleton Gajdusek of National Institute for Neurological Diseases share Medicine prize for infectious disease discoveries. Milton Friedman of the University of Chicago wins Economics prize for consumption analysis monetary history and stabilization policy insights. Awards total 641000 kronor each. inflation-adjusted to about 160000 dollars.
MSSNY president Dr Ralph Emerson in Syracuse urged a very close second look at the swine flu inoculation program while noting no inside information and calling for more detailed analysis. He cited 33 deaths nationwide after vaccination and said many may cancel plans to vaccinate. County official Dr William Harris echoed that deaths appear coincidental with no direct vaccine link.
In Bolton AP report, antiwar activist Susan E. Saxe, 27, faces a second trial for the 1970 State Street bank robbery and police shooting after a hung jury ended her month long murder and armed robbery trial. The mistrial was declared in Suffolk County.
National Weather Service Hancock Field says clouds persist with a 40 percent rain chance tomorrow and highs in the mid teens. Atty Garrett Byrne says Saxe will be retired with no second trial date set. Saxe remains a federal prisoner after pleading guilty to bank robbery and armory burglary as the jury reports ongoing deliberations.
Presidential hopeful Jimmy Carter planned a 2 1/2 hour Syracuse appearance drawing about 5000 with 1500 inside Persian Terrace and lobby. A marquee platform near Warren Street would host overflow as police barricades lined Warren Street and a 2:30 p m airport arrival anticipated.
President Ford rolled up his sleeve and received a swine flu vaccine in the White House as his physician assured safety. He did not wince and remarked he barely felt it. Separately, Special Prosecutor Ruff cleared Ford of any personal-use campaign fund allegations, saying the matter is closed.
