Firefighters contained a blaze in Corinto Nicaragua blamed on U S backed rebels. The fire set off about 1.6 million gallons of fuel and burned tons of food. New fighting flared in Lebanon’s Tripoli and near Beirut as factions eyed talks to cement a cease-fire.
A proposal for a Police Corps trading work for college education is criticized by the president of New York City's Patrolmen's Benevolent Association. Other items include Marcus Dupree's suspension from Oklahoma University, indictments in Rochester over racehorse identity, Syracuse musicians planning a concert, Bowie's Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence opening in Fayetteville, and various sections such as sports entertainment and classifieds.
Witnesses at the State Fair described beatings of men matching the name Swan and others. Daniel Swan, 24, from Syracuse area, reported loss of a testi cle after his Sept. 5 arrest. State police investigated but released no details. Additional complaints rose to 15. Investigators from Albany reviewed同步 press reports and prepared for possible action. Daniel Torelli, 19, and Edward DePalma, 19, were arrested for petit larceny after midnight Sept. 5 and taken to the barracks.
A two alarm downtown Utica fire at 5:42 a.m. in a three story building at 337 343 South St Corn Hill killed a teenage girl and injured four others. Fire officials could not identify the victim. Four people were taken to Faxon Hospital for smoke inhalation. The blaze was extinguished by 8 30 a.m. Witnesses reported a baby was thrown from a window.
Israel plans to link its economy to the U S dollar in a controversial three stage plan. The move, described as revolutionary, aims to fight the nation’s economic crisis but sparked political backlash over loss of independence. Finance Minister Aridor outlined the plan in Washington and it faces Cabinet approval.
Iraqi naval units destroyed two Iranian ships north of Kharg island during the ongoing Persian Gulf war. A warship was hit as Iraqi forces intercepted vessels heading toward Bandar Khomeini, with explosions heard by forward posts. Iran protested the incident amid regional tensions and French arms shipments to Iraq.
More than 100 complaints of child abuse were filed against Bea trice Lovejoy in the past year. The two teens moved out after facing nonstop anonymous calls and the schoolyard rumors, though police and social services found no evidence. Lovejoy says the state has not intervened as the calls persist.
