Hazel Dukes, longtime NAACP New York state chapter president, travels to Syracuse to lead the 10th convention amid renewed battles over civil rights. The three day event at the Sheraton Conference Center in Liverpool expects over 300 delegates.
A blaze at Hillhaven Rehabilitation and Convalescent Center in Norfolk killed nine residents and injured 68 as rescuers evacuated dazed patients through smoke filled halls. Fire Chief Thomas E. Gardner said losses occurred mainly from smoke inhalation with two in the initial room and seven others in separate rooms. Names were being withheld pending relatives' notification.
Chrysler and GM will jointly run New Process Gear and GM's Hydramatic plant in Muncie Indiana, aiming to reduce duplication and boost productivity. Officials insist there will be no overall job losses at New Process Gear though layoffs at the plant precede the venture.
In Charlotte the jury found Jim Bakker guilty on 24 counts of fraud and conspiracy for raising 158 million via his PTL ministry. He vows appeal and says the verdict will be challenged as unfair amid pretrial publicity. He faces up to 120 years in prison and 5 million in fines.
David Lipscomb College in Nashville banned MTV from dorm lounges and the student center after complaints about content and a few students monopolizing the channel. Spokesman David England said the move protects students from immoral programming and preserves others right of choice.
