Clarence Grieb, the 50 year old club manager, was forced from his bed at gunpoint to open the safe containing 7000 in weekend receipts.
Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt told the United Nations in the social committee that the American press is free overall despite faults. She spoke as 57 nations debated a Soviet proposal to alter the agenda for the 1948 world conference on freedom of information and the press, arguing a controlled press harms the whole system.
The 66th A F L convention opened in San Francisco amid tense rumors that John L. Lewis and William L. Hutcheson could lead over 1.2 million miners and carpenters in a walkout. A rift with colleagues threatens federation unity as President William Green works to mediate.
