A three alarm blaze swept the 108 year old Hotel Cody in Grand Rapids Michigan on Saturday. Fire Marshal Palmer estimated damage at 100000. One guest was seriously injured. two treated for smoke effects and about 28 others received on site first aid from Red Cross. The fire started in a meter in the elevator shaft and raced to the attic, engulfing the fourth floor. Guests included 159 permanent residents, many elderly. Firemen evacuated about a score of people to safety. Hotel manager William McDermott saved valuables from the safe before fleeing. The Red Cross opened emergency housing for displaced guests.
The president of the Columbians, an anti Jewish and anti Negro group, was knocked to the floor in a judge's chamber by Dan Duke during a dispute over the charter. Burke sustained a gash above the eye as he and Duke clashed after Burke implied Duke was not a white Anglo Saxon public official. The session ended with a six day postponement of the state suit to revoke the charter. Duke left with the judge promising to handle the matter.
Albany NY acting governor Toa] and Hanley appoint Chandos H. Sells as fuel conservator to coordinate state fuel conservation efforts. He is directed to ensure full state cooperation with the Federal Government in meeting the current fuel situation and to secure similar cooperation from local government units and residents.
SAN FRANCISCO UP A formal contract ending the 54 day east coast maritime strike was signed Saturday by representatives of the ATL Masters Mates and Pilots and the Pacific American Steamship Owners Association. A spokesman for the association estimated a few strikebound ships may be cleared by nightfall, but the bulk of the 148 ships tied up on the west coast would not be moved for between one to five days.
