Violent crime sharply fell in 1996 across the Nation
The 1996 National Crime Victimization Survey shows a 10 percent drop in violent crimes from 1995, the lowest since the survey started 23 years earlier. Rapes and sexual assaults declined 17.6 percent, motor vehicle theft fell 20.1 percent, and property crimes dropped 8.3 percent as reported and unreported cases are counted.
