Forecast calls for cloudy conditions tonight with a low in the 60s and southerly winds 5 to 15 mph, gusty with thunderstorms. Sunset 8 34 p m, sunrise 5 29 a m. Yesterday high 82, low 60. Record highs and lows listed. humidity 54 percent at 8 p m yesterday and 69 percent at 8 a m today. Air quality moderate.
Heavy thunderstorms sweep the western Great Plains with locally heavy rain, strong winds, and hail. Minor flooding reported in North Carolina with up to six inches of rain. Rick Sexton, Ashe County sheriff's dept, notes creeks high and fields washed out, water spouts up everywhere as ditches must be cleared. Showers extend to mid Missouri Valley and spread across Utah, southern Plateau, Ohio Valley, Great Lakes, and Atlantic coast states.
New York City will ease some water rules as up state reservoirs run high. Hydrant openings remain banned but 3000 to 5000 hydrants will get spray caps in non park neighborhoods. Mayor Koch said the move lets residents enjoy summer with less lifestyle change.
Former first lady Bess Truman, 96, stays in fair condition three weeks after hip surgery in Kansas City. Her status improved from serious to fair yesterday as she recovers from the May 7 operation.
