Consumers urged to demand garment serviceability in labels
Don Tripolsky of the National Cleaners Association says shoppers focus on style, cost, and size while serviceability after washing or dry cleaning is often ignored. A proposed FTC rule to test fabrics and guarantee labeling is stalled in Congress. He notes many labels are inaccurate and dry cleaners can test items to identify fault sources. He lists fabric-specific care tips and warns of color fading, shrinking, pilling, and design wear for acrylics, mohair, soft wools, cotton knits, matte jersey, and silks.
