U S Navy Commander Albert A Schaufelberger, head of security for American advisers aiding El Salvador's military, was shot four times while waiting for a Salvadoran woman on a university campus. Fire and police honored for lifesaving deeds during tense incidents

Officers Fahey Picklik and White received Mayor's distinguished service awards for courage under fire and rescue during violent street fight, burglary pursuit, and a January 1982 house fire on Syracuse streets. Fahey shot a knife attacker after lunges toward bystanders. Picklik traced burglar tracks to stop a crime spree. White leapt onto a porch roof to rescue a man trapped by flames.
