Monument honors Bridgeport fire dead as auxiliary recruits
Bridgeport Auxiliary President Beth Smith says recruiting is hard as volunteers balance jobs and family. A granite monument was unveiled outside the Bridgeport Fire Department to honor fallen members and inspire current volunteers. The 15 active auxiliary members, 50 firefighters, and the department trace their roots to 1930. The group funded the monument, supports events, provides refreshments at incidents, and handles pre and post event duties. About 50 people attended the Sunday ceremony for George J. Bud Rhode Jr. Rhode, a former department president, died in a March two car crash in Clay. The auxiliary has raised past gifts for equipment and hall signage. Smith notes more firefighters now volunteer for fundraising, while still marching in parades with the department.
