Mora’s sister Aida Jones and others expressed dissatisfaction though no surprise. Officers celebrated at their defense attorneys offices as jury foreman Victor Stottlar announced not guilty. The case leaves departmental charges pending after Police Chief Sardino suspended them and later returned them to desk work.
Pope John Paul II progresses with limited physical therapy as doctors report his condition remains serious but stable. A hospital bulletin notes the pope rested peacefully after a night of pains, with temperature and lab results normal for the second day post operation. Investigators pursue whether Mehmet Ali Agca acted alone in the assassination attempt.
A Pagan volcano on the Northern Marianas blasted ash to 40,000 feet and lava toward the village. Island residents, about 54 farmers and fishermen, were believed to have sought caves as rescue vessels sped to Pagan. A B-52 crew saw lava flow and an ash cloud, with weathered radio contact and no signs of life. Authorities prepared C-130 and patrols to scout and assist at dawn.
At Dulles Airport a Customs raid on a Soviet jetliner yielded no strategic value in the seized cargo. Officials said the seizure was legal and the only issues were paperwork mistakes, prompting Moscow to denounce the act as criminal and barbarous.
In Detroit Poles neighbourhood the Immaculate Conception Church was spared a wrecking ball then GM offered to move it. The Archdiocese and city rejected the move proposal after GM planned a 500 million Cadillac plant that would raze 1500 homes and 3000 residents. The church sits on the plant site and about 450 parishioners had fought to save it.
