President Truman declares he will not cease to fight for repeal of the Taft Hartley labor act. He argues the law harms labor gains and economic freedom, urging a replacement with a fair measure for both labor and management during a cross country Fair Deal campaign.
Harry Pellino, the vacationing chief accountant for gambler Frank Erickson, surrendered himself at District Attorney Frank Hogan's office in New York. The 49 year old, sought since May 1 in the probe of Erickson, arrived with attorney Joseph Delaney and offered no comment to reporters.
Radio marine Station KPH picked up a distress signal from the Norwegian motorship Talisman reporting a bad fire in her engine room. The call gave coordinates at 34.15 N 137.45 E as the vessel battled the blaze at sea.

Soviet Ambassador Alexander Pan yushkin announced to the State Department he will return to Moscow on leave next week. He briefed acting Secretary James D. Webb for about five minutes and declined to explain the visit, with officials saying he would depart May 16 aboard the Polish liner Batory from New York.
In West Germany the Communist Party disclosed it had exposed its No. 2 leader Kurt Mueller as an enemy agent for a foreign power. The party chairman Max Reimann assailed the United States at a special secret meeting that ousted Mueller.
Four gunmen wearing gas masks robbed three Brink's guards of $15 000 in the pay room of the Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Factory in Thompsonville Connecticut. The guards were beaten and hospitalized in Springfield Massachusetts. Police searched the plant but found no suspects and believe the men entered with the third shift.
Communist leader Eugene Dennis was ordered to start a one year prison sentence for contempt of Congress. Federal Judge David A. Pines demanded immediate confinement, with an appeal pending before the New York Court of Appeals on June 22. Dennis and 100 others had been convicted in 1947 for conspiring to advocate overthrow of the government.
Syracuse forecast remains mild for the time of year as a cold front north of the Great Lakes moves into Central New York. U S meteorologist Andrew P Keller expects tonight’s low around 42, highs near 60, with northeast winds 10 to 15 mph. Temperature averages remain about one degree above normal, though the last five days were cooler.

A Navy pilot died and two crewmen were injured when a torpedo bomber crashed in flames during takeoff at Quonset Point Naval Air Station. The three occupants were not identified pending kin notifications. The two crewmen were hospitalized with non serious injuries.
Kansas City police officers must take a political purity oath under a new rule by the city’s police board. Members are to pledge not to contribute to any political party or club, interfere with elections or nominations, or solicit votes for or against any candidate.
Salvatore Salli, 39, pleaded guilty to sale and possession of counterfeit bills totaling $200,000 in $10 and $20 notes, while Anthony Iraci, 38, admitted conspiracy to violate counterfeiting laws. One count against Iraci for sale and possession was dismissed. Sentencing was postponed to May 26 before Judge Henry W. Goddard.
President Truman's plane Independence was damaged slightly by lightning on the first leg to Paris with Secretary Acheson. The crew reported no excitement and the flight continued to Newfoundland before returning to Washington for overhaul at Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica. Mrs. Acheson and John Sherman Cooper, a Republican adviser, were aboard.
United Nations Secretary General Trygve Lie arrived in Moscow seeking to reduce tensions between the Soviet Union and the Western powers. The Soviet press carried the report without added commentary.
