John J. Ahern, Rensselaer welfare commissioner, proposes Frank J. Hogan resign as Troy mayor and run again in November. He drops quo warranto proceedings over Hogan’s 1939 election, citing secrecy of the ballot as a key reason.
Washington May 8. President Roosevelt and Alf M Landon will meet today with 1940 aspirants Senator Burton Wheeler and Senator Robert A Taft. The sessions may clarify candidate status and party strategy ahead of national conventions. Wheeler seeks Democratic backing. Taft hints at more first ballot votes than Dewey.
In Washington in May backers predict a floor vote on the Hatch anti politics bill after the House Judiciary Committee revived it 14 to 11. Chairman Sumners assailed it as infamous and dictatorial, while supporters expect favorable action as the session nears close. Dempsey maintains pursuit with 122 of 215 needed signatures to discharge the bill.
A New York State Federal agricultural report says the vegetable season is very late due to snow storms and freezing weather. Mussolini and Gayda warn Gibraltar and Suez could ease but not end Italy’s Mediterranean aims, while fascist papers push a Moscow tale of Italy entering war only if Balkan neutrality is breached.
United States power output for the week ended May 4 declined modestly from the previous week but stayed well ahead of last year, the Edison Electric Institute reported. Output reached 2,286,200,000 slow watt hours, down 0.5 percent from the prior week, with the Associated Press index at 122.1, up from 121.4 and 113 a year ago.
Merwin testified the Coster Musica Canadian subsidiary was used to raise capital but not to defraud. The government argues the subsidiary hid money for other uses while a profitable crude drug business funded dividends. He said the plan was to protect stockholders and avoid speculative loss, delaying manufacturing entry until safe conditions.
A New York case opens against Harry Maione Harry Strauss and Frank Dasher for first degree murder in the ice pick slaying of George Rudnick in a Brooklyn garage in May 1937. A 150 member blue ribbon jury panel is to hear testimony with about 30 witnesses including alleged ring leader Kid Twist Reles who turned informer. Defense counsel William Kleinman reports intimidation attempts on a key witness.
Al Ta Schwendiman of the Washington Agricultural Experiment Station reports that over 7,000 grass varieties have been gathered from global sources and are under study at the station nursery.
