Paris dispatch reports a patrol encounter in the East Moselle River sector on the Western Front ended to our advantage. French forces returned with a prisoner and the body of a German. Aerial activity rose with two German planes over Paris and French recon flights over Germany.
In Walsall magistrate court four women were fined four shillings each for failing to display tail lights on baby carriages during the blackout. The arrests followed a collision when one carriage was struck by an automobile.
New York State motor vehicle bureau figures show drunken drivers caused 558 accidents in 1939 with 56 deaths and 900 injuries. The data indicate little progress, with alcohol related crashes higher than 1938 by six fatalities and 5.4 percent of such crashes fatal versus 3.1 percent for other accidents.
Secretary Charles Edison told the Senate Naval Affairs Committee battleships remain the backbone of national defense and will be for years. Admiral Stark outlined a plan to begin building 299,635 tons of warships authorized but unfunded, while a proposed 11 percent expansion would add carriers cruisers and submarines to raise fighting ships to about 1.445 million tons. Stark also sent a chart showing naval construction by the six powers since 1922.
Frederick A. Cook, polar explorer and exiled claimant to the North Pole, now critically ill in Port Chester, seeks Presidential clemency for a mail fraud sentence. A friend says an appeal has been sent to Roosevelt. Cook, 74, collapsed from a cerebral hemorrhage after parole in 1930.
May 7 1940 Thomas Langton a five year old boy died at Lockport City Hospital from injuries after being struck by a automobile. The driver was not held.
New York May 7. Actress Arline Judge and cafe society figure James McKinley Bryant deny reports they are married after attending the Kentucky Derby together. Bryant says it’s a good idea but both confirm Bryant is still married to Edith Flynn while Judge has just divorced Dan Top Ping.
Washington reports a divided Supreme Court ruling on trust cases with a May 20 adjournment delaying a decision on whether Trust Act impact on prices will slow oil price manipulation in 10 Midwest states. Justice Douglas notes price fixing as unlawful though Congress must change the law. A Chicago official signals the next anti trust drive will target food industries.
South Pasadena California May 7 four education leaders died in a gunman rampage at the South Pasadena San Marino school district. Verlin Spencer 38 opened fire killing George C Bush 62 John Alman 50 William Speer 43 and Victor Vanderlip 45 before turning the weapon on himself. Ruth Sturgeon 45 and Dorothy Talbert 30 wounded survived. Authorities described Spencer as an expert marksman driven to violence after contract nonrenewal.
News reports detail a quadruple slaying in Syracuse and an additional sudden death connected to the same city area. Authorities investigate motive and sequence of events while identifying victims and kin.
Police report a South Pasadena High School principal William Speer 43 shot seven people and himself after losing his post. Victims include relatives of Speer and Dr J John M MacInnis family in Pasadena. Three others wounded, condition uncertain.
Texarkana Arkansas May 7 A beer tavern operator Roy Fenton faced charges of maintaining a nuisance after abbreviated costumes worn by young girls serving curbside customers were raised in court. The case was continued to May 16 with no official explanation. Households and a local minister voiced objections to the outfits. Fenton claimed his business had surged 700 percent.
In Binghamtown on May 7 Mrs. Helen Putnam notes her white goldfish Rocky ages 28 still wiggles a mean fin. The fish can splash water two feet and jump six inches when a wire grille is removed. Rocky measures five inches.
About 50 regional poultry representatives will gather at the Onondaga Hotel in Central New York tomorrow to outline a new breeding program. Leo Dilo of the Onondaga County Farm Bureau will preside.
Bert Smith, field supervisor for the Emergency Crop and Feed Loan program, will take loan applications at the Farm Bureau office in the Federal Building on Wednesday May 15.
Rochester May 7 observers studied a three day clinic on modern problems. Dr William A Eddy of Hobart College led a round table with leaders from Eastman Kodak General Motors Institute and DuPont. Discussions focused on higher education role in democracy and national independence.
Rome reports the death of Ernesto Vassallo 65 longtime Mussolini aide and former undersecretary of foreign affairs and war correspondent who died last night in Rome.
