Ruckelshaus pledges firm EPA enforcement and reform

Catholic bishops urge no nuclear war and broad support

Cardinal Bernardin led a 238 to 9 vote by 51 million Catholics approving The Challenge of Peace, a 44 000 word pastoral letter denouncing nuclear weapons and urging a freeze and sharp cuts. Central New York tornadoes kill, damage run high. Boonville disaster bid urged

Cleanup continues as 11 tornadoes hit upstate New York including Onondaga Cayuga Oneida and Chautauqua counties. Oneida County Executive John Plumley seeks disaster area declaration for Boonville after hundreds of millions in damage. A Cato man, Charles Patchett, 49, killed when his trailer was hurled 380 feet. Power and phone service largely restored by Tuesday night. crews worked through Monday night with limited rest.

Tornado ruins memories in Clay couple’s home loss

Al Davis wept as a bulldozer and grader toppled the remains of his house in Clay after a Monday tornado. He and wife Sonja had lived there 24 years, saving long for the home on Banstead and Horseshoe Island roads before it collapsed. Onondaga County crews demolished the rest amid risk of further collapse.

Living bandage helps woman beat debilitating skin disease

Cleo Phillips 48 improved after doctors at Magee Women's Hospital treated necrotizing fasciitis by wrapping her body in amniotic membranes. The procedure slowed infection, saving her life after two months bedridden. Surgeon Dr. Fred Silverberg called her near death before the membranes aided recovery.
