The Weather Man said cold spell ends soon and temperatures rise through Wednesday with a warming trend. A slow-moving low pressure area over the Ohio Valley will reach Syracuse tonight or Sunday, bringing showers Sunday and Monday. Overnight frost at 31 degrees caused little crop damage.
In Jerusalem Arab youths rioted amid a one day strike opposing the British American inquiry panel recommendation to admit 100000 Jews to Palestine. Abdel Rahman Azzam Pasha of the Arab League warned some Arab leaders favored turning Palestine into a battleground and evacuating women and children as a step toward war. He stressed the move was a measure of desperation, though not yet actual desperation. The situation intensified tensions in the Holy Land.
Franklin Institute records a tremor at 5:25 PM EST Friday about 12,000 miles away in the South Pacific. Dr Roy K Marshall, institute director, called it apparently a tremendous quake and likened it to the 1931 Napier quake in New Zealand.
In Jamestown a local man A. B. Peck of Grand Island Neb offers to trade sheet metal tools for butter. The Crescent Tol Co. in Jamestown is involved but has faced an eight week strike and is short of butter bait.
Washington reports the administration called the Senate to an unusual Saturday session to speed a British loan. Republicans Ball of Minnesota and Smith of New Jersey led the move to curtail debate on a long term $3.75 billion credit arrangement with Great Britain.
Iran notified that Russian troops will withdraw from three western Azerbaijan towns near the Turkish border as the May 6 deadline nears for total evacuation. Evacuated towns include Rizaiyeh Urmia Khoi and Shai pur Dilman. Soviet officers attended a farewell party at Pahlevi Enzeli on the Caspian coast.
Los Angeles transit officials and union leaders ended talks abruptly as 1,000,000 tram customers faced continued service disruptions. Negotiations stalled with no quick settlement in sight, leaving the public to cope through next week at the earliest.
Belgrade based report says Lt Gen Alexander Rankovic states Draja Mihailovic has refused to be defended at his treason trial by Morris Ernst of New York City. The exchange centers on representation for Mihailovic as the trial date looms.
Mrs. Frieda Latterner, 38, widow of former City Treasurer Charles Latterner and noted soprano, is in serious condition at Auburn City Hospital after her sedan left Route and struck a telephone pole near Skaneateles. She suffered fractures of both legs, arm abrasions, and shock. Police report the car skidded 145 feet then 45 feet after impact before stopping. she was thrown from the vehicle. She previously sang with Manhattan Opera Company and belongs to St. Paul’s Church choir.
Waldo Ruess, a Hollywood, California embassy clerk, was summoned to Moscow's city prosecutor to face charges of insolent acts toward an actress at a state theater. He has worked at the embassy for two years and planned to return home. no arrest or bail was required.

Stearns factory in April 1945, pleaded innocent to a first degree arson charge. He waives examination, is held for grand jury, and lacks legal counsel. Detective Capt.
