National Weather Service at Hancock Airport warns of more showers and thunderstorms this week. Tonight’s low around 50, tomorrow’s high 55 to 60. Extended outlook calls for showers through Thursday with low 40 to 45 and high 55 to 60. Partly sunny on Friday.
Stock prices eased from late week highs as investors acted on a recommendation to take profits. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 15.58 to 1,210.62 by noon after a period of gains in April.
In Winston-Salem six current or former Ku Klux Klansmen and three American Nazis pleaded not guilty to federal charges alleging a conspiracy to disrupt a 1979 anti-Klan rally in which five demonstrators were killed.
A head-on collision on the Thruway near exit 26 left two dead and nine injured, including four children. Names are withheld pending family notices. ages range from 22 months to 47 years. Vehicles included a station wagon and a pickup truck. one likely crossed the median. The westbound lane was closed about two hours.
At a Los Angeles May Day protest, mounted riot police and foot officers clashed with demonstrators during a Revolutionary Communist Party rally in MacArthur Park, resulting in more than 20 arrests. Washington echoed tensions as a former ambassador attacked Reagan over grain talks with the Soviet Union while Chicago protesters braved storms to back Solidarity.
A Capitol Air DC-8 with 212 aboard, hijacked by a gray haired man, returned to Miami after being held at sea near Grand Turk Island. The hijacker claimed a bomb and passed notes to crew from the front lavatory. Flight 236 originated in Puerto Rico and later grounded in Havana due to jammed emergency doors. The man’s identity remained unknown as FBI officials pursued leads.
The court ruled 7 to 2 that a California loitering statute demanding identification when stopped is unconstitutional as vague, potentially letting police too much discretion. It left room for narrowly drafted rules, while noting some identification requirements may survive with clear standards. An 18-year-old Pasadena man, Jack Farnam, is to be arraigned in Los Angeles County Superior Court for the 1981 death of Barbara Ann Griswold, daughter of Fayetteville resident George Griswold. He allegedly confessed to two other Holiday Inn incidents and to the Hilton assault by his brother. Farnam grew up near the Holiday Inn and was arrested after a series of similar hotel attacks. The case could take about 60 days to go to trial, though court backlogs may delay.
