The body of 75 year old Lillian Cox of Cohoes was found in the Hudson River near New Baltimore. Greene County Coroner Alton B. Daley ruled death by drowning likely linked to a personal crisis. Cox had been missing from her home since November 26.
The Symington-Gould Corporation pays $23,028.22 to settle an Office of Price Administration treble damage suit filed March 30. The case concerns alleged overcharges on steel castings from its Depew and Rochester plants. The suit was discontinued by stipulation upon receipt of the check payable to the U S Treasury, as stated by OPA Chief Enforcement Attorney David A White.
Chicago May 2. President Roosevelt’s wartime authority to seize private business was argued as Montgomery Ward battles to regain control of federally seized properties. The government asserts executive power to take possession to prevent labor trouble, while Ward contends the seizure exceeds statutory scope and should be dissolved. The case may reach the Supreme Court.
London May 2. Prime Ministers from George’s dominions gather as second front looms. Churchill and Eden to brief Stettinius while Canada Australia New Zealand and South Africa seek clear postwar security plans and Pacific war progress.
