In its first year the university operated industry sponsored million volt X ray tested 16 500 metal castings to show its value as essential to war production. It helped inspect magnetos housings aircraft parts gears and welds and drew firms from Pittsburgh Bradford Buffalo Elmira and Watertown to use the equipment.
