Tenant climbs tree to halt yard demolition in Manhattan
In midtown Manhattan, tenant Maryanne Leach spent hours in an ailanthus tree to stop the planned demolition of a shared yard by S and M Enterprises. Construction workers had begun clearing gardens and fencing for a parking lot and a 36 story building, leading to eviction protests and a temporary halt order to protect passersby from falling debris. The tenants, 34 families in six buildings, accuse the owners of pressuring residents since October, with a court date set for a permanent injunction.
