The National Weather Service at Hancock Airport warns of overcast skies tonight and tomorrow with a 70 percent chance of rain in Central New York. Overnight low near 40, tomorrow high about 50. Showers possible Sunday with daytime highs in the mid 40s.

Wholesale prices in February rose a mere 0.1 percent while food costs for retail sale jumped 0.6 percent. A White House spokesman called it good news in the inflation fight. Personal spending held steady with a record deflation rate of 5.3 percent noted in the separate Commerce report. Pittsburgh police say officer Caroline Stonehouse 40 tried to end a long affair with retired officer Witham Welsh. After repeated court complaints and an alleged harassment history, Welsh was shot once in the back on Stonehouse’s Mount Washington balcony. Stonehouse was arrested on murder charges.
Chautauqua County Executive Joseph Gerace, a Lakewood lawyer and Democrat, accepted Gov. Mario Cuomo’s offer to become state agriculture commissioner. The move, pending Senate approval, would pay 86750 a year. He replaces J. Roger Barber, who was appointed by former Gov. Carey in December 1974.
