A National Weather Service forecaster at Hancock Airport projects 60 percent rain tonight and tomorrow with a low around 85 and a high near 40. The outlook shows showers Saturday and Sunday, then fair Monday, with daily lows in the 30s and highs in the upper 40s. Weather map, Page AZ.
Washington UPI reports new unemployment claims climbed to 501000 in the first week of March. The Labor Department release shows an increase erasing the prior week’s apparent improvement in the labor market.
The British press says Prince Andrew fell for a 21 year old blonde, Tracie Lamb, during a Barbados shore leave with the Royal Navy. London tabloids claim she ousted Koo Stark with sightings at a cocktail party aboard HMS Invincible and in Barbados surf.
A coalition of Syracuse black leaders plans to boycott the mayoral conference on minority affairs, criticizing organizer Dr. Robert Pritchard a Baldwinsville publisher for being outsiders. They accuse the event of narrow control and exclude participation. Officials say NAACP advisers may skip the event while the mayor is away. Deputy Mayor says the idea originated with a minority gathering hosted by the mayor.

Robert J. Stone today was named Onondaga County commissioner of social services, succeeding John L. Lascaris who retired in February. The 49 year old, previously executive deputy commissioner for 10 years, will oversee a $90 million budget and 850 workers. He intends to review departments to avoid dramatic changes while pursuing Medicaid reform and staying within resources. Cuomo’s proposal shapes future funding.
A federal judge in Oregon will decide soon if Dennis Banks may stay in New York while his Portland trial for a 1975 illegal possession of firearms case proceeds. If ordered back, Banks faces extradition to South Dakota or a bench warrant, heightening pressure on federal agents. The May 2 trial includes Banks, his wife Karnoot, and three others. an April hearing will address over 120 pre trial motions.
