Chinese Communist forces shelled Quemoy for 23 minutes starting at 2 PM firing 52 shells from Tateng Chinguy and Chaiaoyu. Premier C K Yui said Nationalists will fight for Quemoy and the Matsu group with or without American aid. No casualties or damage reported in the communique.

Sir Alexander Fleming, 73, the Scottish scientist who discovered penicillin, died of heart disease at his London home. He won the 1945 Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine with two coworkers for the antibiotic’s development. He first produced penicillin in 1928 while at St Mary’s Hospital.
Rome senate braces for a boisterous finale on the Paris treaties to rearm West Germany with a vote expected to ratify. Premier Scelba's coalition appears set to approve the pacts, following Malan's House approval and Einaudi's signing, making Italy the eighth nation to ratify.
Dust storms with winds up to 70 mph swept across the Great Plains hitting Colorado Oklahoma Texas Nebraska and Kansas. Union City Indiana suffered $500000 in business district damage and a $100000 Philco plant loss. Winds toppled trailers near the Philco plant and cut power to WENS and KDKA in Pittsburgh for 15 minutes. The Carrie Furnace bridge suffered the greatest single loss at about a million dollars.

Residents reported cellar and street flooding in Avery avenue Essex street Myrtle avenue areas as a 24 inch Solvay area drainage pipe spilled water onto the section. Meteorologist Andrew Keller notes 2.31 inches of rain this month with more rain or snow tonight and a five day forecast near normal highs.
Two men William Giglio and Frank Silvorsi were sentenced to 15 years each for an $850000 income tax evasion scheme. They were convicted after allegedly profiting millions in sugar operations during scarcity at war’s end. Assistant U S Attorney Miranda Wessel described them as organized gangsterism in the city and nation.
